A cannon specialization with a real defensive cost

A Patchy cannon build should make its damage bonuses useful across the equipment you choose. It should not be described as a tested invincible setup. The supplied runs show cannon combinations, while current player advice recommends Patchy for a focused cannon plan; they do not establish a controlled Patchy leaderboard result.
Use this as a build direction with explicit trade-offs, not a promise that one captain will fix unfamiliar weapon handling.

A practical Patchy starting loadout
One detailed player recommendation starts with Wanderturm, Patchy, cannon crew, Side Cannons and Reset Lever, with Magma Core unlocked for later selection. It then adds Front Cannon and prefers Cannon Tower for the top slot, with Top Mortar as an alternative. Mine Layer or Dash fills the rear depending on what is available. This is a suggested route, not a mandatory five-part shopping order or a fully verified Patchy run.
The recommendation also values Lead Core for cannonball knockback. Its role is to keep approaching enemies away while the cannon attacks work; it is not a reason to stop watching the route. In desert fights, players specifically warn about infantry pressure and the pirate's incoming-cannon trade-off. Strong damage against a large vehicle does not remove smaller threats around it.
Use the Reset Lever combo guide for the distinction between level-related reloads and Triangulator refunds. If those interactions are not available, keep the cannon plan functional through ordinary damage and cooldown choices. The conditional Wanderburg tier list places the build alongside other supported directions rather than claiming it beats them in every stage.
Respect Patchy's incoming-cannon penalty
Hotfix 0.9.10 reduced the enemy cannon bonus-damage penalty from 50% to 25%. That is a smaller drawback, not immunity. Read the current captain text if playing a later build.
Avoid driving toward cannon fire merely because your own shots are doing well. Leave a route to break away after the burst. A boss taking damage can still outlast a castle that trades away its health on every pass.
The defensive lesson is especially relevant in areas with many ranged enemies: your damage plan and your survival plan must both work.
Use a different captain when the trade-off is the problem
If incoming cannon hits are already what ends your runs, a specialist penalty may be the wrong next experiment. Keep the cannon modules and try a more familiar captain before discarding the weapon family.
The starting captain comparison separates that decision from buying another weapon. Patchy is one cannon-build option, not a prerequisite for every cannon setup.
Check the cannon setup before choosing the captain
Begin with the chassis and the modules you can actually equip. A Side Cannons plan needs a Side slot. Front Cannon needs the Front slot. Cannon Tower is named in the community recommendation as another cannon option, but that does not make it automatically available on your account or guarantee it will appear at the next selection.
Check purchase status as well as the unlock challenge. A module that is visible in the collection is not necessarily ready for the next run. If an intended cannon attack is still unavailable, plan around the working equipment rather than selecting a specialist captain for a completed build you cannot yet assemble.
The community advice also recommends cannon crew. That is a way to keep more of the setup within the same damage family. Read the equipment icons on the current loadout screen to confirm compatibility. Do not assume that every explosive-looking attack counts as a cannon attack, or that a damage bonus applies merely because the projectile resembles a cannonball.
The Side Cannons guide covers the recorded Front Cannon unlock condition. Keep the first objective modest: get one cannon attack working consistently and add compatible support as it becomes available. The general cannon recording shows Front Cannon and Side Cannons together, but it does not establish a complete Patchy progression or an exact required order of purchases.
Approach, fire and leave with different angles in mind
Front Cannon creates a simple aiming requirement: bring the intended target into the front of the castle before the important burst. The desert cannon footage explicitly notes that this feels different from other starting attacks. Give yourself room to align rather than waiting until the enemy is beside the castle and then making a tight turn under fire.
Side Cannons can support the following pass when the target is beside you. Think of the two attacks as parts of a route. An approach can provide a front shot, and a wider passing line can provide a broadside. This is a suggested way to use their directions together, not a guaranteed attack sequence against every enemy.
Leave after the useful burst when the area is becoming crowded. Patchy's incoming-cannon drawback makes repeated trades especially relevant. A successful volley is not a reason to remain in an enemy firing lane while waiting for the next one. Use automatic coverage during the retreat and return from an angle you can control.
If one weapon routinely misses during this route, simplify the pass. Use the attack you can align safely, then add the second once the movement is comfortable. Firing every available ability at the same instant can waste a front or side attack whose target is elsewhere. The damage shown on the card only matters when the attack reaches something useful.
Choose artifacts without assuming an unverified combo
The player recommendation names Reset Lever, Magma Core and Quick Reload as cannon artifact candidates. It does not provide a controlled run demonstrating their exact interaction order, and it is not enough to promise an infinite cooldown loop. Use the current descriptions to decide which one helps the attacks you are actually using.
A cooldown-related choice is attractive if a productive burst leaves a long dangerous wait. A damage-related choice is attractive if accurate attacks still leave the target alive through too many passes. A condition-based effect needs its condition to occur during normal play. Do not select a complicated interaction whose trigger you cannot reliably produce under pressure.
An artifact affecting all Front modules has a different scope from one affecting cannon damage across the loadout. Compare that scope with the equipment already installed. A narrower effect can still be valuable when Front Cannon is doing most of the useful work; a family-wide effect gains relevance as additional compatible attacks become important.
The module upgrade guide compares these upgrade decisions. You can take defensive or movement support without losing the build's identity. If cannon damage is already adequate but every approach costs too much health, another offensive artifact may leave the actual failure unchanged. Patchy rewards a cannon focus only when the castle survives long enough to deliver its attacks.
Keep the opening and the boss plan connected
Use early fights to build the attack you expect to use against the first boss. An optional tower is worthwhile when you can remove it without spending the entire preparation window nearby. The community suggestion to hunt artifacts also makes exceptions for healing needs and fast enemies; it should not be shortened into advice to attack every large target immediately.
Collect resources between useful bursts and avoid arriving at the boss with the important ability unavailable. When the boss appears, focus the attack on that encounter rather than continuing a reward chase. A delayed fight can become harder to approach as more enemies occupy the area, making precise cannon positioning less comfortable.
If the first boss takes too long, distinguish missed attacks from weak hits. Misses call for a better firing line; weak hits after a clean approach call for relevant upgrades. If the boss dies quickly but the castle is badly damaged, keep the successful offense and address the route or defensive trade-off before the next encounter.
The evidence supports this practical cannon direction and the official change to Patchy's drawback. It does not supply a verified current damage bonus, a best-in-slot item list, a complete Patchy run or a survival record. Those missing details should not be filled with numbers from older unnamed cannon footage. The reliable starting point is compatible equipment, accurate bursts and deliberate avoidance of incoming cannon fire.
